Mr. Murdock really isn’t a mister. In fact he isn’t a he. He is an it. It is a faucet. But it’s not just any ole faucet. It’s a hydrant, a water hydrant. And it’s not just a plain water hydrant. It’s very fancy….. in the world of hydrants. They are used in places like horse farms, vineyards, and cattle ranches. And, we are getting one for our courtyard. Yikes!
Here’s the back story. When we asked our plumber to replace the 1980’s vintage (not in a good way), rusted, and ugly water faucet in the walled-in brick courtyard in our new digs, he jokingly suggested we get a Murdock. “What’s that?” Mr. Autumn asked. Our plumber explained that it is a heavy-duty, fancy, and well-built hydrant. Mr. Autumn was sold. So……………we’re getting one. It could possibly be the focal point and conversation piece for many of our future outdoor dinner parties.
This is cleaned-up version of our old faucet.
We have learned that the Murdock company that makes our new faucet hydrant has been around for over a century. They were started to make water delivery systems in 1853. All of you autumns out there probably sipped water from a Murdock in your school’s playground or at your park when you were growing up. Well, they are still going strong. They even make fire hydrants.
This is a Murdock public drinking fountain from the 1950’s. Does it look familiar to any of you? For you twenty and thirty-somethings reading this, we drank out of these loooong before bottled water became the in-vogue “water delivery system” .
This is our Mr. Murdock. He isn’t that big, but he is that fancy. He might look long and lean, but he is really heavy – as in too heavy for me to lift – heavy. I wouldn’t want to stub my toe on him. I was hoping he would come in a nice black, but he is only available in green. Hmmmm. When Mr. Autumn isn’t looking, I might have to get out the black spray paint!!
