When we were working with the architect to design the remodel of our new digs, I saw this photo of Brook’s powder room over at Velvet and Linen. I love the refined yet rustic look. Although you will probably look at my photos and think, “I don’t get it,”, this was my inspiration for our tiny space.
I loved the table that she used, the rolled up linens in the basket under it, the garden pot she used as a sink, and the wall faucet with only one handle. I decided that I can take her look and loosely translate it into my own look.
First, let me remind you of what the former owner’s powder room looked like.
This mural was painted on a canvas glued to the wallpaper of the powder room.
This is the wallpapered ceiling. 1990?
This is a blurry shot of the sink area.
My first step in the process of capturing her look was to find a table. Based on a past experience of finding the right table for a vessel sink, I thought I would end up getting it custom-made. But during a casual trip to my favorite furniture consignment shop, I spotted a mission style oak table that I thought would work. After checking its dimensions against the width of our powder room, I bought it. My plan was to remove the top and replace it with carrara marble that would tie in with the carrara on the floors of the three full baths and with the kitchen countertops.
The table in this photo is similar to the one I bought. I painted it white like Brook’s.
This shows a sample of Carrara marble. It is important to personally select each slab that will be used in your home because they can vary greatly. All of our marble floors and countertops will be honed.
I like our house to flow easily from room to room by using common elements throughout. I checked with our marble man, and he assured me that we could use a small slab of marble for the top, and that it could even be a remnant. That $ounded even better.
I took it one step further and asked him if he could put a marble backsplash on the wall and make it look kind of like this countertop in the Pottery Barn’s catalog. I like the bull-nose edge. (That’s what they call it in the industry. It’s a new word to me).

Actually I adore your inspiration photo. I love the contrast of the straight lines and the curvy lines of the mirror and the lamp. I think all of the natural textures will feel soothing and spa like. I look forward to seeing what mirror you choose for over the sink.
