This past summer I bought a dough bowl at a local antique store. I didn’t realize until I took it home that it is the size of a small canoe. Or at least half a canoe. A toddler could definitely use it to paddle up the creek.
Whoever owned this baby had made a lot of dough. It is huge, as you can see from the photo. I’m thinking they baked for the army, the navy, or maybe the Duggars. I love it but just didn’t realize how big it was. It spent several months leaning against the wall in the kitchen and looked as if it belonged.

When Christmas season rolled around, I decided to load that bad boy up with faux greenery and apples and call it the dining room centerpiece.
Since my mantra this year is to use what I have in interesting ways, this fits the bill. I also pulled out a very old piece of French linen that I have had for several years but never used. They look so nice and old together – like a couple that have been together for years and years.
It almost fills up the entire length of the dining room table. When we eat there, it needs to be removed so the plates and the food will fit.
The little wooden apples that I added to the mix came from Williamsburg, VA many years ago. One of them looks as if it has been eaten, so I laid it on the table to be the element of surprise. (Doesn’t that sound fancy???)
Isn’t it cute?
The bowl has been well-used. I love how old and distressed it is. For some reason, I like rustic things especially at Christmas. It must have something to do with my childhood. I think that I would have some rustic decorations around at Christmas even if I lived in the most contemporary house out there.

I love your dough box!! What a great find. And it looks great on your table filled with Christmas cheer 🙂
I love it! My dough bowl leans against the barn board cabinet most of he time. I might have to set it up on the table and fill it with greens. Yours is beautiful!
Oh the dough bowl looks awesome. It has such character and looks just beautiful with all of the greenery and apples!!..
I wish that I had your Dough Bowl!! I have been looking for one, and I am trying to find one at a good price!
Way back when your Bowl was made, Family’s ate much more bread than they do these days.
Due to this fact, yolur Bowl would have held the dough which was needed for a baking of bread, for a large Family.
Also, your Bowl might be from overseas, as the Dough Bowls there tend to be larger from what I have seen in my travels.
Your Dough Bowl looks Lovely on your table! Happy Holidays!!! 🙂
This bowl! So classic and pretty! And the apples are adorable! Reminds me of a cute ornament I had as a kid, making this particularly nostalgic to me. Beautiful job!
this is great-ilike rustic and greens this time of year, too. the duggars, now that’s funny!
I have seen these dough bowl, but did not know what there were. Looks like you have made good use of it. Also, your house is so beautifully decorated. So welcoming.
Your dough bowl really looks good with those greens and the red of the apples. I love rustic at Christmas time too.
I think your dough bowl is wonderful, and looks especially with the old linen and filled with the greenery and apples. I especially like the one that looks partially eaten — how fun is that!
You are too funny in telling the story of the “large” dough bowl. It turned out great.
I’m totally cracking up at this post. I just bought a dough bowl online. It was marketed as vintage so I have to believe it is. I swear it could make enough dough to feed an army. It is gigantic! I’m not even sure if I can fill it up. Actually I’m not even sure it will fit on my table. It’s currently sitting on my dining room floor. I have to get up the courage to do something with it and I am so grateful for this inspiration!
