How to Change the Look of a Tray

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating, Entertaining, Projects

I sort of have a thing for trays.  I am especially fond of the butler tray style.  It seems as if the boxy style lends itself to many uses.  One of the things I like most about a tray is that it is easy to change the look without a lot of effort.  It is an easy fix that anyone can do.  The bonus is you don’t need to invest a lot of time, and you don’t need a lot of skills in the DIY department.  Our latest Angie’s List article discusses trays, and how their looks can be changed to suit your needs.

Before you leave here to read that article on the link below, I wanted to show you what my latest tray purchase looked like when I found it on sale at Home Goods.  I liked everything about it except the artwork.  It just didn’t go with anything else in our home.  I did like the white paint and the style.

The tray already had a piece of glass in it to protect the art, but it couldn’t be removed.  That was okay, though.  I simply took the tray to my local glass shop, and they cut a removable piece of glass for me in just a few minutes and for just a few dollars.  For you local readers, I like to use Economy Glass on Magnolia Street.  Then I took two pieces of scrap book paper and cut them to fit into the tray.  I put the glass on top, and the tray had a whole new personality.  This look will be easy to change whenever I want, because I can just take the glass out and add fabric, wallpaper, wrapping paper or scrapbook paper.  It will be an easy fix.

This is what it looked like when I used it to serve afternoon tea over the July 4th weekend.
