It looks as if I’m on an art kick around here (read more about it here) because today’s post deals with that topic – again. We all know how pricey unusual art can be, but I have a great idea to share that deals with art that is special, meaningful, and somewhat original. And it will usually cost you less than one dollar each. Yep, you read that right!
Post cards……..It’s that simple. How many times have you been to a flea market, auction, or antique sale and you’ve seen a vendor who has tons of them for sale? They are usually organized by themes (trains, bridges, states, holidays, etc.) You can buy most of these vintage treasures for very little.
This New Year post card is dated 1912. It looks great on our entry hall table.
It doesn’t show up too well in this shot because of the glare, but you get the idea.
I just leaned this little New Year card against a lamp. I didn’t even bother with a frame.
Check out the date.
My grandmother collected them, and when Jordan was little we bought a pile of post cards dating from 1905 – 1919 from a man in my hometown for just a few dollars. We have used them ever since. Jordan used them for Christmas decorating (here), I used them at Thanksgiving (here), and we used them in a really special way at Jordan’s wedding. (We’ll tell you about that in April).
We have them for every major holiday. These are for Valentine’s Day.
These are some of the Easter cards. At one point Jordan had them all filed according to the holiday or theme. That kind of got sidelined.
There’s even one for the fourth of July. It doesn’t look very old, does it? But its date goes back to the early 1900’s. The nice thing about the old cards is that if you want to preserve them and have copies made to use, there is no problem with copyrights because of their age.
If you read our Thanksgiving and Christmas links above, then you saw the cards for those two holidays. We have lots more, but the holiday cards are truly our faves. I hope you got some ideas from this and can find some post card art that you can use in your homes.
