{"id":862,"date":"2011-03-29T07:23:39","date_gmt":"2011-03-29T12:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=862"},"modified":"2011-03-29T07:23:39","modified_gmt":"2011-03-29T12:23:39","slug":"indoor-composting-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=862","title":{"rendered":"Indoor Composting 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Author: \u00a0Spring<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Mr. Spring and I have casually discussed starting a compost pile once the weather turns nicer outside. \u00a0It has been so snowy and cold here that we assumed that we wouldn&#8217;t be able to start this project for a few more weeks.<\/h3>\n<h3>However, we went to a garden show to do some research for an upcoming backyard landscaping project. \u00a0And while there, we learned \u00a0about indoor composting with red wiggler worms. \u00a0 \u00a0So, we left the garden show with some information on landscaping and something we hadn&#8217;t planned: \u00a0one pound of red wiggler worms.<\/h3>\n<h3>I know it sounds a little gross to have a compost pile in the house, but if you do it right, it doesn&#8217;t smell or take up much room. Plus, it&#8217;s easy because now we do not have to throw leftover veggies, coffee, tea bags, egg shells, etc. into the trash or in the disposal.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1060\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/03\/29\/indoor-composting-101\/olympus-digital-camera-34\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Once we had the worms, we needed to get the rest of the supplies to build the composter. \u00a0We stopped by the store and bought a bin and some screen covering, which turned out to be all of the items we needed to purchase.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The first thing I did was to drill six holes into the bottom of the bin.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1064\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/03\/29\/indoor-composting-101\/compost-drilling-holes\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" drilling the holes, I cut out some screen fabric and placed it in the bottom just \u00a0to keep the worms from \u00a0getting out. \u00a0I also put the bin on a lid to collect any water that might seep out from the moist mixture.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1062\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/03\/29\/indoor-composting-101\/compost-screen\/\"><img sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Once I the drilled the holes in the bin, the composter was ready for the worms to have a new home. \u00a0The first step was to put some bedding into the bin. \u00a0I used shredded paper. \u00a0We were told that shredded paper, and cardboard, work best.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The next layer was some dirt and leaves that we gathered from our yard. \u00a0After that layer, I put the worms in the bin, \u00a0put some food in the corner, and covered it with dirt. \u00a0We then placed the bin under a light to get the worms adjusted to their new environment. \u00a0We thought this was pretty funny, but it was recommend to us by the &#8220;worm vendor&#8221;. \u00a0The directions indicated we needed to do this for a couple days. \u00a0After they had one day of light, we thought it was fine to put the lid on the bin and then move it to our quiet and dark basement.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">We had some guests \u00a0that evening who wanted to see our latest project. \u00a0We took them downstairs, and when we opened the lid, the worms were everywhere. \u00a0 So, we put the bin back under a lamp to get them to go back down into the dirt.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align:
