On a recent week-end, Yankee\u00a0and I didn’t have any plans. \u00a0The lack of snow has made it impossible to do some of our winter sports – especially snowshoeing. \u00a0 So, \u00a0we decided to go ahead and tackle the kitchen backsplash. \u00a0Tackle makes it sound worse than it was, though.<\/h3>\n

We had talked about doing a subway tile backsplash, so we already did our research. \u00a0We even took a free “How to Tile a Backsplash” class at our local Home Depot. \u00a0That class is where we learned about this Tile Setting Mat. \u00a0It makes\/made the process so easy.<\/h3>\n

Yes, this method cost more than the old school way of putting up tile, but we thought it was worth every penny. \u00a0We followed the directions exactly. \u00a0It was up, and we were ready to tile in no time. \u00a0Plus, we were able to grout right away. \u00a0We didn’t have to wait for the bottom layer to dry first. \u00a0Basically, we took this backing and stuck it to the wall. \u00a0Then we pulled off the plastic covering when we were ready to put up the tile. \u00a0There is no mess. \u00a0Just imagine. \u00a0No mess with installing a back splash. \u00a0 I love this product!<\/h3>\n

This shot shows the start of the subway tile actually going up. \u00a0We only had to do spacers on the bottom where we were going to caulk because the tile already has built-in spacers. \u00a0We had five outlets to deal with, and we made sure the power was turned off before starting the tile work.<\/h3>\n

The outlets made it necessary for us to cut some tiles. \u00a0We didn’t always make a clean cut as you can see. \u00a0This was not a successful attempt.<\/h3>\n

We used this product<\/a> to cut some of the tiles, and after we got our routine down, \u00a0it was very easy to use.<\/h3>\n

However, we eventually had to upgrade to a wet saw<\/a>. \u00a0We had some difficult cuts for the tile that was going to go around the window. \u00a0Yankee, made those cuts.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0After just a few hours, the tile was up, and we were ready to add the grout.<\/h3>\n

This is not the best picture, but we used the grout that was premixed. \u00a0Again, it does cost a little more, but we didn’t want to question if our constancy was correct. \u00a0We just smoothed it on and wiped it off.<\/h3>\n

This is what the kitchen looked like before we painted the walls a soft blue, painted the cabinets white, and added the subway tile.<\/h3>\n

Voila! \u00a0The After! \u00a0We removed the spice rack that was behind the range and decided to keep it off.<\/h3>\n

This is the kitchen before the backsplash. \u00a0It looks better than the original, but the backsplash just gives it that final finishing touch.<\/h3>\n

We are thrilled with the way the tile came out. \u00a0Here you can see one of the quirks of our house. \u00a0The sink is not in front of the window. \u00a0Only a small part is in front of the window. \u00a0What were they thinking???? \u00a0The tile actually helps it not look so strange. \u00a0I still have some ideas for that area to help even more, but \u00a0if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.<\/h3>\n

We are going to take a breather from the kitchen now. \u00a0We still have appliances to buy, but we want to save up for them. \u00a0And meanwhile, with spring around the corner, it is time to turn our attention to the major facelift we will be doing on our front yard. \u00a0Stay tuned…….<\/h3>\n
