Hello, everyone.\u00a0 Today’s post is a result of my determination to grow flowers and vegetables in our courtyard garden<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 After years of hating to put food down our kitchen disposal, I decided it was time to make a simple compost bin and put it to use.\u00a0 This little DIY project is so easy, and it took just a few minutes to accomplish.\u00a0 Whether you have a backyard garden or just a few annuals growing in pots, a compost bin is a nice thing to have so you can enhance your soil.\u00a0 Plus, it’s environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n

This is what you need:<\/h2>\n

Plastic bin with a lid (we already had this)<\/p>\n

Drill with a 1\/2 or 3\/4 inch bit<\/p>\n

Small bag of soil<\/p>\n

The first thing you do is drill holes in the lid and bottom of the bin.\u00a0 I had Mike use a 1\/2 inch drill bit and drill 12 holes in the lid and 12 holes in the bottom.\u00a0 (He did this before we went on a bicycle ride which explains while he is wearing his spandex.) The holes in the lid let rain enter, but you might have to add some water if it dries out.\u00a0 Too much water can cause a smell.\u00a0 The holes on the bottom allow for drainage.<\/p>\n

Add some soil, leaves, or organic lawn debris to get it started. Then add your kitchen scraps.\u00a0 Do not add grease or meat.\u00a0 Also, I don’t add bread products.\u00a0 I keep my kitchen scraps in a small plastic container under the sink, and when it is full, I take it outside and empty it into the bin.\u00a0 I stir it with a small shovel as needed.<\/p>\n

Be sure to keep the lid on it so squirrels and other varmints can’t get in.<\/p>\n

We placed our in a corner of the courtyard near the air conditioner.\u00a0 We cannot see it when we don’t want to see it.<\/p>\n

Jordan made a compost bin years ago and used worms to help everything decompose faster.\u00a0 I have decided to just let nature take its course and forgo the worms.\u00a0 It might take longer to break down, but I don’t expect to use it until next spring anyway.\u00a0 Let us know if you make your own compost bin.<\/p>\n
