{"id":44206,"date":"2020-03-08T18:00:01","date_gmt":"2020-03-08T23:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=44206"},"modified":"2020-03-08T11:45:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-08T16:45:35","slug":"tips-for-refreshing-your-dining-room-shelves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=44206","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Refreshing Your Dining Room Shelves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>W<em>e recently did a refresh of the dining room shelves and want to share some tips with you today.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, I decided that our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2019\/11\/03\/the-dining-room-shelves\/\">dining room shelves<\/a><\/span> were looking a little tired.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t crazy about the way I styled them originally and had not done a thing to change that.\u00a0 I knew I needed a fresh pair of eyes to give them a refresh.\u00a0 I called my friend Beth Harper, the Lone Rearranger, and scheduled a visit.\u00a0 Beth is so good at taking what you have and giving it a better look.\u00a0 You might remember that she is the one who helped hang the <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2020\/03\/02\/a-diy-wall-of-mirrors\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">mirrors on the wall of our stairway.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 Based on the final look of our shelves, we have some tips for refreshing your dining room shelves.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44208\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-11-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-11-242x323.jpg 242w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-11-640x853.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shop the House.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t even need to take things off of the shelves before Beth arrived.\u00a0 However, I did shop the storage shelves in our basement to select some items that have a spring vibe.\u00a0 I also picked out some things that haven&#8217;t seen the light of day for a while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44209\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-22-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-22-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-22-242x323.jpg 242w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-22-640x853.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The very top shelves stayed the same, but we redid the second shelf.\u00a0 I previously had lined up some platters, and that look just didn&#8217;t do it for me.\u00a0 Beth agreed and got to work.\u00a0 She doesn&#8217;t use a formula or anything.\u00a0 She just arranges things so that they look nice. Here are some tips to use if you want to give your shelves a refresh.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Book shelves aren&#8217;t for just books.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44219\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-92-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-92-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-92-242x323.jpg 242w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-92-640x853.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Adding a variety of items mixed in with your books makes the shelves look more interesting.\u00a0 The little girl was an engagement gift (there&#8217;s also a boy), and she was antique when we received her.\u00a0 The pencils were a souvenir from Argentina, and the little tin they are in was an Ikea find.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use what you have.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44218\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-91-953x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-91-953x1024.jpg 953w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-91-301x323.jpg 301w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-91-768x825.jpg 768w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-91-640x687.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I bet each of you can shop your house and come up with cute and interesting items for your shelves. For instance, those shoes belonged to my late mother-in-law.\u00a0 My father-in-law bought them for her during World War II.\u00a0 She never wore them, obviously.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use seasonal items.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44217\" 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I like to use seasonal items like this bird cage in the spring and summer.\u00a0 It will be replaced with gourds and mini pumpkins when autumn rolls around.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Paint or don&#8217;t paint.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44216\" your shelves or not.\u00a0 Right now, ours are painted the same color as the walls.\u00a0 (Stucco at 50% by Sherwin Williams.)\u00a0 I know that in the future we can opt to change the color which will change the overall look.<\/p>\n<h2>Use souvenirs.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44213\" 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shelf displays are great places to use your souvenirs.\u00a0 I have mentioned here that I only buy souvenirs that will work in our house.\u00a0 The top pair of opera binoculars in this photo were purchased about 25 years ago on a trip to Estonia.\u00a0 The other pair belonged to Mike&#8217;s aunt and are quite old.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use vintage items.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44211\" 242w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Dining-room-shelves-4-640x853.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These bottles were in my mother&#8217;s laundry room since my childhood.\u00a0 Back then Lestoil (which is like today&#8217;s Pinesol) came in bottles like this.\u00a0 There were also green ones and amber colored ones.\u00a0 Mother liked them so she kept them, and I&#8217;m glad she did.\u00a0 The painting behind them is an old water color that I bought in an antique shop in Paris.\u00a0 It has been all over this and previous houses.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use high and low.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-44215\" fun to mix expensive items with inexpensive things.\u00a0 Ditto for mixing old with new.\u00a0 It&#8217;s more fun when your shelves tell a story.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Have fun with it.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re like me, you take this shelf stuff too seriously.\u00a0 There are no right and wrong rules.\u00a0 It&#8217;s done right when it looks right to you.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this
