It’s the first day of the month and time to revisit our favorite post from last March.\u00a0 This one offers up some sound decorating advice that we all can use.\u00a0 We hope you enjoy seeing it again.<\/p>\n

We have an non-profit organization here in Lexington called the Bluegrass Trust, and their mission is to offer inspiration and leadership to the preservation movement in Central Kentucky.\u00a0 Each March they put on an antique show and sale.\u00a0 Part of the event is a luncheon with a keynote speaker, and that speaker is always a designer.\u00a0 This year’s speaker was Amanda Nisbet, and I was lucky enough to be there for her presentation.\u00a0 Her topic was Designing with Antiques in the Modern Home.\u00a0 Since I was hearing some great design tips from a pro, I took notes so I could share them with you.\u00a0 Amanda is not a trained designer with a bunch of initials behind her name.\u00a0 She is a decorator who has good taste and was able to grow a business, build a good reputation, and write a book.\u00a0 I didn’t write down everything she said, but I have the highlights for you.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Update<\/h2>\n

1.\u00a0 Make items from the past interesting.\u00a0 Amanda inherited many beautiful items from her mother and grandmother.\u00a0 Some of them fit in with her taste, and some didn’t.\u00a0 She loves combining old items with modern items to create layers of interest.\u00a0 She used her beautiful Wedgewood with modern pieces.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Do It Your Way<\/h2>\n

2.\u00a0 Using antiques is eco-friendly, but do it your way.\u00a0 For instance, use modern fabric on a old chair.\u00a0 If you have an old table, use new chairs with it or vice versa.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Spread Them Out<\/h2>\n

3.\u00a0 Don’t put all of your antiques in one space.\u00a0 Use them throughout the house.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Old Items\/New Ways<\/h2>\n

4.\u00a0 Use old items in new ways.\u00a0 She uses a large tray as a fireplace cover.\u00a0 I loved this idea, but I don’t think I have seen a tray as large as this one.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Combine Decorating Periods<\/h2>\n

5.\u00a0 All new everything, doesn’t “look good”, as she phrased it.\u00a0 She believes you should combine periods such as 18th century with mid-century modern.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Art<\/h2>\n

6.\u00a0 Use big art with small art.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I love the way this combo looks.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Change It<\/h2>\n

7.\u00a0 If you don’t like it, change it.\u00a0 She had a chandelier that was just so-so, and to make it fabulous, she dipped it in plaster.\u00a0 This was one of those brass chandeliers we all have seen, but the brass is long gone now.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Paint<\/h2>\n

8.\u00a0 It’s okay to paint furniture.\u00a0\u00a0 We bloggers already know this one!!!<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Use the Corners<\/h2>\n

9.\u00a0 Don’t forget the corners of a room.\u00a0 They can be softened with screens, plants, etc.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Make Ceilings Shine<\/h2>\n

10.\u00a0 Lacquered ceilings make a room.\u00a0 She said that a ceiling with a shine adds luminosity to a room and highlights a wonderful chandelier.\u00a0 You can achieve this effect by layering many coats of high gloss paint to the ceiling.\u00a0 However, walls that have a shine will highlight imperfections.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0Use Color<\/h2>\n

11.\u00a0 Don’t be afraid of color.\u00a0 The girl loves bold colors, but she uses them tastefully.\u00a0 We can do that, too.<\/h3>\n

\u00a0If You Love It, Buy It<\/h2>\n

12.\u00a0 Buy what you love.\u00a0 This is always my favorite advice.\u00a0 If you don’t have room for it now, you will find a spot for it, and it will fit in with the rest of your decor because they are also things that you love.<\/h3>\n
