{"id":3246,"date":"2011-07-10T19:09:03","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T00:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=3246"},"modified":"2011-07-10T20:02:56","modified_gmt":"2011-07-11T01:02:56","slug":"its-not-easy-being-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=3246","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Not Easy Being Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Author: Spring<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>I am sorry I haven&#8217;t been posting as much. \u00a0I have been traveling for work, and it has taken time out from doing projects on our house and from posting on our blog.<\/h3>\n<h3>But I have good news! \u00a0The biggest project that Mr. Spring and I wanted to do this summer was the backyard, and we are finished &#8211; for now!!! \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/05\/09\/backyard-face-lift-part-1\/\">Here<\/a><\/span> you can read about the start of our backyard transformation.<\/h3>\n<h3>Our backyard was filled with rocks and Zen gardens from the previous owner, and we wanted grass to add some color. \u00a0It would also make it more fun and inviting for Gracie to be able to run around the yard. \u00a0(Disregard the chicken wire in the pictures it is our temporary fix till we update our fence next summer).<\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0The first thing we did was remove the rocks and the landscaping fabric. \u00a0We removed over 12 cubic yards of these rocks, and we found a nice man on Craigslist who was willing to pick them up and take them away. \u00a0Ripping up the last few yards of landscape fabric was so hard for us till we realized roots were all tangled into the fabric. \u00a0This made the last piece extremely difficult to pull up.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-roots-in-fabric\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3256\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3256\" title=\"Backyard roots in fabric\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-roots-in-fabric-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Here are some of the roots that were in the fabric.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-progress\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3258\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3258\" title=\"Progress\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-progress-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">We also decided to remove a huge shurb\/tree. \u00a0It was creating a lot of shade, and we needed all the sun we \u00a0could get in the back part of the yard. \u00a0I cut down all the limbs, and Mr. Spring worked and worked on removing the bulk of the tree.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-tree\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3248\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3248\" title=\"Tree\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-tree-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-tree-682x1024.jpg 682w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-tree-215x323.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Once all of the rocks were out and the landscape fabric was removed, we were ready to use a rototiller and till the soil.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-tilled\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3249\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3249\" title=\"Yard ready for sod.\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Backyard-tilled-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>We decided instead of seeding the backyard that we wanted instant gratification, and we went with sod. The sod cost 33 cents per square foot, and we thought \u00a0was well worth it in order to have instant grass. \u00a0When the sod was delivered, it was a beautiful sight.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-sod-on-pallet\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3253\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a>We were so happy to see it. \u00a0The sod was delivered on a Friday afternoon, and we installed it the same day after work. \u00a0It was the easiest part of the whole backyard.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-sod-in-roll\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3254\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Before ordering the sod, we bought a soil testing kit to test the soil. \u00a0We learned our soil wasn&#8217;t as bad as we thought it might be.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/olympus-digital-camera-68\/\" rel=\"attachment a turf builder\/starter fertlizer on the soil before we put down the sod.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mr. Spring is adding fertilizer to our tilled yard.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rented this for $7.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/07\/10\/its-not-easy-being-green\/backyard-water\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3247\"><img process.
