I have had so much fun in the past turning men’s plaid wool sports coats into perfect fall pillows <\/a>that I decided to go there again.\u00a0 Except this time was a little different.\u00a0 I used a man’s flannel shirt that I purchased for half price at the thrift store.\u00a0 I selected a large shirt in a fabric that I thought would look good on a scare crow.\u00a0 After all, if it’s good enough for a scare crow than it’s good enough for our outdoor bench..\u00a0 The steps were very simple, and I am not really a seamstress, but I can sew a straight line.<\/h3>\n

And that’s all you need to do to make a DIY fall pillow from a flannel shirt.<\/h3>\n

The first thing I did as soon as I got it in the door was throw the shirt into the washer and then the dryer so it would be nice and fresh.\u00a0 Then I ironed it and paid particular attention to the button placket because I wanted that part to be as smooth as possible.\u00a0 Next I buttoned up the shirt and sewed down the placket so it wouldn’t gap open after it was full of stuffing.<\/h3>\n

Then I removed the pocket because I wanted to reposition it.<\/h3>\n

How large to make the pillow depends on the size of the shirt.\u00a0 I positioned it so that I could cut out a good rectangle, and it ended up being about 20 inches by 16 inches which was a good size for my purpose.\u00a0 I then cut out the front and turned the shirt over and cut out the backing from the back of the shirt.\u00a0 Since I used a plaid pillow, I tried my best to cut it so that the plaids would match after the two pieces were sewed together.<\/h3>\n

The next step was sewing.\u00a0 First, I put the pocket where I wanted it to be, and I sewed it to the front of the pillow.<\/h3>\n

Then I put the front and back together with the outsides of the pillow on the inside.\u00a0 I sewed a straight seam around the entire rectangle except about five inches on one side.\u00a0 That spot needed to be open so that I had a opening for the stuffing.<\/h3>\n

I made sure to iron it all once again before I added the stuffing.\u00a0 By the way, here<\/a> is another way to make a nice pillow if you are using a pillow form rather than stuffing.<\/h3>\n

After I stuffed it, I sewed up the opening on the side, folded and ironed a piece of fabric that would look like a pocket square, and it was all finished.<\/h3>\n

This whole sewing process took about 30 minutes, and I ended up with a cute little shirt pillow that adds some character and a homespun touch to our fall decorations.<\/h3>\n
