{"id":3143,"date":"2011-09-20T18:51:37","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T23:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=3143"},"modified":"2011-09-21T19:23:06","modified_gmt":"2011-09-22T00:23:06","slug":"neighborhood-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=3143","title":{"rendered":"Neighborhood Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Author: Spring<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>After we moved to our Syracuse neighborhood, the neighbors told us about a project in which members of the Cornell Historic Preservation Planning Program did a cultural survey of our neighborhood. \u00a0The members put together an 80-page booklet for the residents telling them what the study learned about the neighborhood and its different styles of homes. \u00a0They even included copies of the original ads that were published when the plots were being sold. \u00a0 The area was marketed as an easy commute.<\/h3>\n<h3>This area was on farmland only two miles from downtown Syracuse. \u00a0In 1910, 140 acres of this area was sold to a company that now is the name for our neighborhood. \u00a0The landscape architect and urban planner for the neighborhood was Arthur C. Comley. \u00a0He graduated from Harvard, which had the first landscape architecture program in the country.<\/h3>\n<h3>He wanted to make a great first impression with the entrance into the neighborhood and designed a cobblestone and pedestrian friendly entrance in 1916.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/entrance-better\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3163\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3163\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Entrance-Better-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Entrance-Better-430x286.jpg 430w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Entrance-Better-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">This is the pedestrian friendly entrance to the neighborhood.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The neighborhood became famous throughout the city because it had Syracuse&#8217;s first electric house with exterior electric lights and built-in appliances. It was the talk of the town, and the mayor even visited the house.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The house designs are quite eclectic. \u00a0Come along and take a peek at a few of them.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/ramsey-farm-house\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3153\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3153\" title=\"Original Farm House\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Ramsey-farm-house-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">This style is early Italianate and is the only remaining building from the original farm. The time frame is from 1840 to 1885.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Italiante is a square plan with simple details, and it is borrowed from the rural architecture in the northern party of Italy. \u00a0These homes have decorative crowns.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/ramsey-tour-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3149\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3149\" title=\"Spanish Electic\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Ramsey-Tour-3-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">This is an example of Spanish Eclectic. \u00a0These were built from 1915 to 1940.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">These styles have low pitched roofs which are most likely tile. \u00a0There is often at least one prominent arch above a door or window. \u00a0These homes also have some sort of balcony and decorative iron sconces and are frequently stucco.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/ramsey-homes\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3152\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3152\" title=\"Spanish Eclectic\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Ramsey-homes-430x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/ramsey-tour-8\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3145\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" pitched gabled roofs and elaborate chimneys. \u00a0Many of the Tudor Revivals have decorative half-timbering as well as tall, narrow windows with multipane glazing.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a>This is an example of Colonial Revival.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Houses built in the Colonial Revival style have the simplicity and refinement of Georgian and Federal styles while incorporating details that are more modern.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/house-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5054\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5054\" title=\"Colonial Revival\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/House-2-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"368\" 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">These houses are generally rectangular with a high gable or hipped roof. \u00a0Common character defining features include an accentuated front door, supported by columns, windows with double- hung sashes.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/09\/20\/neighborhood-tour\/house-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5053\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5053\" title=\"Colonial Revival\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/08\/23\/a-little-mascara-and-some-lipstick\/house-after-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4440\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4440\" title=\"Craftsman \" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/House-after-2-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"327\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a>Our house is an example of a Craftsman style house.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">This style originated in Southern California and inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement. \u00a0This was the popular style for smaller homes built from 1905s through 1920s. \u00a0The features are low-pitched gabled roofs, exposed rafters.<\/h3>\n<h3>Although this is just a small sample of the homes in our neighborhood, you can see that the early neighborhood developments are quite different from the developments that surfaced
