{"id":29787,"date":"2016-02-02T19:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T00:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=29787"},"modified":"2016-01-17T12:48:28","modified_gmt":"2016-01-17T17:48:28","slug":"the-advantages-of-down-sizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=29787","title":{"rendered":"The Advantages of Down-sizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Almost five years ago we downsized from the family home in the suburbs to a townhouse in the city.\u00a0 If you have been reading this blog for a while, then you already know that, and I apologize for being redundant.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s an important part of today&#8217;s topic.\u00a0 You wouldn&#8217;t believe how many people tell me they want to live in a smaller home, they want to move downtown, or they want to get rid of some (or lots) of their stuff.\u00a0 Moving to smaller quarters is a lot of work, and it&#8217;s an emotional drain, but there are some major advantages to down-sizing.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29208\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSCF0059-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Janette's suburb house\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSCF0059-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSCF0059-430x323.jpg 430w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSCF0059-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/DSCF0059-900x675.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Our big move to smaller quarters was initiated by Mr. Right.\u00a0 He came home from a conference where they had talked about the resurgence of downtowns and how people will soon want to move to the city from the burbs to be closer to the action.\u00a0 I was thrown for a loop when he said that.\u00a0 After all, I had considered our home in the burbs to be our forever home that we would only leave when we were headed to the grave.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29790\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hurd074-1.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan descends the stairs\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hurd074-1.jpg 860w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hurd074-1-430x287.jpg 430w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hurd074-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Mr. Right&#8217;s timing was off, though.\u00a0 Jordan was about to be married, and we really wanted to see her walk down our steps in her bridal gown.\u00a0 By the way, it was a moment I will never forget.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27196\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_0577-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Passport tray\" width=\"640\" height=\"961\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_0577-682x1024.jpg 682w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_0577-215x323.jpg 215w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_0577-300x451.jpg 300w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_0577-900x1352.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>She was married in the spring, and we had a bunch of traveling lined up. And that gave me some time to get comfortable with the idea. So, after all of our plans were completed, we put the house on the market at the worst time of the year &#8211; two weeks before Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Lucky for us, we had a contract on it by Thanksgiving, and our move was in motion.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11704\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_2822-1-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Herbs\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_2822-1-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_2822-1-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>In order for this move to work for me, I told Mr. Right that my new home must have some dirt.\u00a0 I still wanted to be able to grow my herbs and have some flowers to tend to.\u00a0 Having just a balcony wasn&#8217;t going to be enough.\u00a0 We had been looking at townhouses throughout that summer and fall, and we found three that fit the requirements.\u00a0 We numbered them in order of our preferences.\u00a0 Numbers two and three sold, and our number one choice was still on the market when we were ready to buy.\u00a0 And buy it, we did.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23973\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_0020-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Townhouse\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_0020-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_0020-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>When we first lived in Lexington, we had a house with 7,000 square feet that was on 10 acres in the country.\u00a0 When our son was a senior in high school, we moved to a house with 4,000 square feet in a wonderful area on the edge of Lexington.\u00a0 Our townhouse has 3,000 square feet, and it offers room for all of our needs, wants, and more.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Downsizing has given us these advantages:<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>We walk to most of our activities.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 Downtown Lexington is full of great restaurants and a wonderful historic movie theater, performance theaters, and galleries, and they are all within a twenty minute walk.\u00a0 We are also near the University of Kentucky campus, and we are able to walk to sports events, concerts, and the art museum.\u00a0 We also live near a post office (that happens to also be a chocolate shop that gives out free samples) a pharmacy, lots of adorable locally-owned retail shops, our church, etc.\u00a0 The front of our townhouse faces a popular historic park, and we can play in the grass any time we want, but we don&#8217;t have to mow it.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>2.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>Getting away is easier.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 We travel a lot.\u00a0 Both of our children live in other states, and our parents live in other states.\u00a0 Plus, we do our cycling trips, volunteer vacations, get-away vacations, and long week-ends away.\u00a0 Because we live in a townhouse, we pretty much can lock the door and leave.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have to worry about getting the yard work complete because we don&#8217;t have a yard.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>3.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>There&#8217;s still room for everybody.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 Even though we downsized, we still have the largest master bedroom we have ever had plus a big guest room with its own bath.\u00a0 Mr. Right&#8217;s office can quickly transform into a guest bedroom, and there&#8217;s a full ensuite bath.\u00a0 We added a full bath and Murphy bed in our basement, and so it also becomes another private guest quarters.\u00a0 By using furniture that has more than one duty, (ottomans with storage, benches with storage, trunks as coffee or end tables, etc.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>4.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong> You don&#8217;t need as much stuff.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 Even though it was tough to get rid of our kids&#8217;
