the Courtyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Even though we have only lived in our townhouse for four years this month, we have already updated\/upgraded our landscaping in the courtyard.\u00a0 The courtyard was originally designed and planted by nationally known landscaper <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/08\/21\/an-unbelievable-garden-tour\/\">Jon Carloftis<\/a> (also <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/08\/22\/more-of-the-garden-tour\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/12\/14\/dining-at-the-old-governors-mansion\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2011\/12\/20\/the-old-governors-mansion-part-deux\/\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0 However, there was a period of five years when no one lived here, and that lack of attention was hard on the plants.\u00a0 When we moved in, we had to remove all of the shrubs because they were in such bad condition and kept just the service berry trees, a sweet magnolia tree, and an espaliered apple tree.<\/h3>\n<h3><!--more--><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27408\" 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>To get to this point we <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2014\/05\/11\/adding-real-estate-to-the-courtyard\/\">removed<\/a> the sweet magnolia because it had overgrown its space, and just this spring we chopped down the apple tree.\u00a0 It was plagued with a fungus and also had outgrown its little patch of dirt.\u00a0 We also removed the knockout roses that we planted when we moved in because they just weren&#8217;t doing well.\u00a0 Other than the original service berry trees, the only remaining plants were boxwoods, hostas, and a clematis.\u00a0 We put in all of those plants our first summer here, and they are all doing very well.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" plant an espaliered crab apple tree on this brick wall next spring.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about softening the brick.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<img 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>One of the many things I love about our courtyard is that even though it is small, it still has distinct areas like an eating area, a sitting area, and a gardening area.\u00a0 I was so impressed by the courtyard at Ralph Lauren&#8217;s restaurant in Paris and am working toward achieving <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/09\/26\/lunch-at-ralph-laurens\/\">that look<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-17957\" 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Oh, we can&#8217;t forget the all important <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2013\/05\/12\/my-new-potting-benchbarserver\/\">bar<\/a> area.\u00a0 I replaced the wooden top with a slab of black granite and will show that to you soon.\u00a0 The wood just wasn&#8217;t holding up in the weather.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3 between rain storms.\u00a0 You have probably noticed that the bricks are wet in some of the shots and dry in others.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t staged the way I would like it to a condo.\u00a0 I had to have dirt.\u00a0 When we found this place with its charming and private courtyard, we both just knew it was the one.\u00a0 I can spend hours out in the courtyard reading,
