{"id":23680,"date":"2014-08-04T18:00:08","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T23:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=23680"},"modified":"2014-08-04T16:38:32","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T21:38:32","slug":"diy-project-gone-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=23680","title":{"rendered":"DIY Project Gone Wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>It happens to everyone, and it has even happened to me before but<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> this<\/span> has been my biggest DIY flop to date. \u00a0It all started because I was bored with our Ikea dining room table, and I wanted to give it a new look. \u00a0We bought it when we lived in Atlanta in the discount department of Ikea. \u00a0It was in perfect condition, but since the box was a mess, I guess they had to mark it down &#8211; way down. My husband, who was then my fiance, was thrilled with the price.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20539\" alt=\"House Tour - The 2 Seasons\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/House-Tour-DR-2.jpg\" width=\"668\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/House-Tour-DR-2.jpg 668w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/House-Tour-DR-2-430x287.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0This is what I was working with for my before. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t bad at all, but I was getting tired of the light colored wood. \u00a0I had a grand plan to paint the chairs and bottom of the table white. \u00a0Then I would sand down the top and stain it a dark color to have a somewhat farm house table look. \u00a0Plus, it would better go with our dining room hutch.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-23687\" alt=\"DIY gone wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7750-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7750-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7750-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Last week I decided it was finally time to give the table an update. \u00a0The finish (it had a sealer on top of the natural wood) was getting worn down in places as you can see in the picture, so, I thought it was a good time to start.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-23688\" alt=\"DIY Gone wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7756-1024x629.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7756-1024x629.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7756-430x264.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">I moved the two sections of the top of the table outside to sand down before I started the staining step. \u00a0Inside, I broke out some Annie Sloan chalk paint and painted the chairs and the base of the table.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-23685\" alt=\"DIY Gone Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7758-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7758-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7758-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">I spoke to some company reps of a wood finishing product at Haven, and they told me exactly how to stain the table and were very helpful. \u00a0They told me I needed to use a wood conditioner before adding the stain. \u00a0After sanding I used the conditioner. \u00a0The table top is birch wood, so I knew this step was a must. \u00a0After it dried for 24 hours as directed, I started my staining application. Maybe it would be okay and have an aged look. \u00a0I had my neighbor come over to get her reaction. \u00a0I asked her opinion, and she was silent. \u00a0That was it. I had officially ruined our table. \u00a0I went inside and started looking online to buy a new table. \u00a0I forgot to tell you that we eat all of our meals in our dining room, and having a table is important to us. \u00a0Meanwhile, this was all happening last Friday, and Mr. Spring had been out of town on business all week. \u00a0The weather in the Adirondacks for camping was not looking good, so, instead of going away for the week-end, we decided to have a dinner party. \u00a0Oh my what was I thinking? \u00a0I had a little over 24 hours to come up with a solution.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-23684\" alt=\"DIY Gone wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7761-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7761-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7761-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Friday night after Mr. Spring came home he said all I would have to do is sand it down and we could start from there. \u00a0I got out the belt sander and started sanding and sanding and sanding. \u00a0One and a half hours later I was getting back to the original wood. \u00a0I have never been happier to see bare wood. \u00a0The next day after another one and a half hours later of sanding, I had one section of the table back to where I started. \u00a0The clouds started to get dark, and I knew I wouldn&#8217;t be able to start the sanding until another sunny day. \u00a0I emptied the bag of sawdust five times because it was dusty.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-23682\" alt=\"DIY Gone Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7780-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7780-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IMG_7780-430x286.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mr. Spring helped me bring in the tops of the table, and this is what we currently have in our dining room. \u00a0(We used a table cloth for the dinner party). \u00a0It is not exactly Pinterest ready!!! \u00a0I know&#8230;.
