{"id":20197,"date":"2013-10-10T17:13:22","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T22:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=20197"},"modified":"2013-10-10T17:16:14","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T22:16:14","slug":"croque-monsieur-french-sandwich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=20197","title":{"rendered":"Croque Monsieur French Sandwich"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>I&#8217;m not gonna lie.\u00a0 Every time I am in Paris, I try to eat the same thing almost everyday for lunch.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 Boring&#8230;..right? \u00a0(I guess I should say except when I&#8217;m eating at <a title=\"Great Idea from Ralph Lauren\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2013\/10\/08\/great-idea-from-ralph-lauren\/\">Ralph&#8217;s<\/a>). \u00a0My favorite sandwich in the world is a Croque Monsieur.\u00a0 It is basically a hot ham and cheese sandwich with a cheese sauce on top that is then broiled.\u00a0 Ironically, I had my first Croque in a little French dive in Cambodia, and I was hooked.\u00a0 Yeah, yeah, we make grilled ham and cheese in this country all the time, but no one does it better than the French.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s the bread.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s the crisp salad with a delish dressing as a side.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s the fact that I am in Paris when eating it.\u00a0 Or maybe&#8230;..it&#8217;s just plain good.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-20199\" alt=\"Croque Monsieur\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Croque-Monsieur-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Croque-Monsieur-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Croque-Monsieur-430x323.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>I have discovered through my research that no two are the same, but oh, la, la, they sure are good.\u00a0 Today I am serving up the Barefoot Contessa&#8217;s version for you to try chez vous.\u00a0 Add a little wine and some good conversation, and it might just make you feel as if you are in Paris.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>CROQUE MONSIEUR<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<h3>2 tablespoons unsalted butter<\/h3>\n<h3>3 tablespoons all-purpose flour<\/h3>\n<h3>2 cups hot milk<\/h3>\n<h3>1 teaspoon kosher salt<\/h3>\n<h3>1\/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper<\/h3>\n<h3>Pinch nutmeg<\/h3>\n<h3>12 ounces Gruyere, grated (5 cups)<\/h3>\n<h3>1\/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan<\/h3>\n<h3>16 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed<\/h3>\n<h3>Dijon mustard<\/h3>\n<h3>8 ounces ham, sliced but not paper thin<\/h3>\n<h3>Directions<\/h3>\n<h3>Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.<\/h3>\n<h3>Melt the butter over low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour all at once, stirring with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes. Slowly pour the hot milk into the butter\u2013flour mixture and cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce is thickened. Off the heat add the salt, pepper, nutmeg, 1\/2 cup grated Gruyere, and the Parmesan and set aside.<\/h3>\n<h3>To toast the bread, place the slices on 2 baking sheets and bake for 5 minutes. Turn each slice and bake for another 2 minutes, until toasted.<\/h3>\n<h3>Lightly brush half the toasted breads with mustard, add a slice of ham to each, and sprinkle with half the remaining Gruyere. Top with another piece of toasted bread. Slather the tops with the cheese sauce, sprinkle with the remaining Gruyere, and bake the sandwiches for 5 minutes. Turn on the broiler and broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the topping is bubbly and lightly browned.
