{"id":19445,"date":"2013-08-13T17:38:28","date_gmt":"2013-08-13T22:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=19445"},"modified":"2013-08-13T17:41:13","modified_gmt":"2013-08-13T22:41:13","slug":"visual-tricks-to-enlarge-a-small-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/?p=19445","title":{"rendered":"Visual Tricks to Enlarge a Small Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>When we were at Haven, one of the sessions I attended was Decorating Challenges taught by Stacy from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notjustahousewife.net\/\">Not Just a Housewife<\/a>, and Wendy from <a href=\"http:\/\/shabbynest.blogspot.com\">The Shabby Nest<\/a>.\u00a0 Their class was loaded with great information that anyone can use in a home.\u00a0 Last week I wrote about how to <a title=\"Decorating Tips for Rental Spaces and Dorms\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2013\/08\/05\/decorating-tips-for-rental-spaces-and-dorms\/\">decorate a rental apartment or dorm<\/a>, and today I will fill you in on what we learned about small rooms.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>ADD PLENTY OF LIGHT<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">When a room is small, having a lot of light makes it seem larger.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s what we want to do here &#8211; trick the eye.\u00a0 That can easily be done with plenty of light.\u00a0 If the room has several windows, great!\u00a0 If it doesn&#8217;t, make sure there is plenty of artificial light &#8211; either lamps or ceiling lights.\u00a0 Of the two choices, lamps are better because they soften a space.\u00a0 Overhead lights can often been harsh, especially when they are fluorescent.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-18570\" alt=\"DIY Sphere\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4881.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4881.jpg 534w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4881-215x323.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">We are very lucky in that our 1928 bungalow is loaded with windows, but we still have plenty of lamps.\u00a0 Most of our lamps were purchased <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2013\/03\/04\/my-thrift-store-lamps\/\">second hand<\/a>, like these two on the sofa table in our living room.\u00a0 New shades and a can of spray paint can work wonders on making a humdrum lamp look trendy.\u00a0 We have all shapes and colors of lamps scattered around our house.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t have to match, but they should complement each other.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><!--more--><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MAKE SURE THE SCALE OF THE FURNITURE MATCHES THE ROOM<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">A sofa or chair that is too big for a space will visually reduce the square footage in a room.\u00a0 Sometimes a significant other might want a huge sofa so he can kick back and watch the games on a leisurely Sunday afternoon.\u00a0 Resist the temptation.\u00a0 You can always have comfort without going overboard on the size.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-19477\" alt=\"Sofa right size.\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_5187.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_5187.jpg 800w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMG_5187-430x276.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-17741\" alt=\"Blog all living room\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blog-all-living-room.jpg\" width=\"554\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blog-all-living-room.jpg 4272w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blog-all-living-room-430x286.jpg 430w, http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Blog-all-living-room-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">We found a sofa that is both comfy and is the right size for the room, and we were able to add a loveseat for even more space.\u00a0 The rug, coffee table, and <a title=\"A New Look for the Fireplace Area\" href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2013\/07\/28\/a-new-look-for-the-fireplace\/\">side chairs<\/a> all work with the proportions of the room.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>UNCLUTTER<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">We Americans are fascinated with stuff.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all fine, but keep it under control.\u00a0 Keep bins in an out of the way closet or in the basement to store seasonal and holiday items.\u00a0 When you switch things up, it will all look fresh and give your home a new and welcome look. Baskets, shelves, trunks, drawers, cabinets, and under the bed and stairs all make great spots for organized storage.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Look up.\u00a0 We found some <a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/11\/12\/bathroom-storage-just-like-marthas\/\">great storage space over the door<\/a> in our main bathroom.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t take Mr. Spring long at all to build this box that now provides the perfect spot for our extra towels.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>GO VERITCAL AND GO LIGHT<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">It&#8217;s okay to use a large piece in a small room if it goes vertical.\u00a0 You can also use that vertical space by building or buying shelves for a wall.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">This hutch actually works with two of the rules.\u00a0 It is located in our dining room which has very little wall space.\u00a0 By adding this hutch to the room, I have additional space to store dishes and glassware.\u00a0 Also, it blends in well with our light gray walls and so it takes up very little visual space.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>ANGLE FURNITURE<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Angle furniture in a room to draw the eye to the longest part of the room.\u00a0 I have some angled furniture (see photos above), and a decorating friend of my mom&#8217;s is a huge fan of this technique.\u00a0 She will often place furniture or rugs on the diagonal to draw the eye in.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19448\" alt=\"101872520.jpg.rendition.largest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bhg.com\/rooms\/living-room\/room-arranging\/living-room-furniture-arrangement\/?page=4\">sourc<\/a>e)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">People often push the furniture against the wall thinking that it makes the room look larger.\u00a0 By moving the furniture away from the wall and putting it on the angle, it draws the eye in and creates the perfect conversation area.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>MIRRORS!!\u00a0 MIRRORS!!\u00a0 MIRRORS!!<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mirrors open a space by reflecting the light from windows and lights, plus they add movement.\u00a0 Mirrors are also an inexpensive way to fill blank spaces on your walls, and again, they don&#8217;t take up visual space.\u00a0 Instead, they double it.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" 461px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mirrors on closet doors and mirrors on furniture do the same trick.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:
