an out-of-state university, and since one of us still lives in the Bluegrass State, and since both of us love all things Derby, we thought it would be fun to highlight some Kentucky Derby\/horse facts we have mentioned before. \u00a0Tomorrow we are going to show you how to put together a great Derby party. \u00a0Later this week, we will have some recipes for popular Derby foods. \u00a0(Can you say style=\"text-align: center;\">Did you know that Churchill Downs officially opened in 1875? \u00a0The twin spires weren&#8217;t built until 1895 and are the race track&#8217;s most recognizable feature.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Here in Lexington where I live, we have Keeneland which was just voted the most beautiful race track in the country. \u00a0We don&#8217;t mind giving Churchill Downs, which is 70 miles away, its day in the spotlight once a year. \u00a0Its iconic twin steeples are easily identifiable by people all over the world. \u00a0But in the end, we still think Keeneland is prettier.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2248\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9676\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" center;\">Before a horse can get to this point, it has been through many hours of training and receiving the best care that any animal can stand. \u00a0Each year over 30,000 thoroughbred foals are born, but only one-third of them will ever run in a race. \u00a0To make it to the Derby, a horse must have the build, the stamina, the personality, and the desire. \u00a0Just because a horse has the best winning ancestors that money can buy doesn&#8217;t insure it will be a racer. \u00a0It must\u00a0love\u00a0to run.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2089\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9677\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2089-1024x981.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"589\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Lots of people don&#8217;t realize that no matter when a horse is born during the year, they all officially turn one on January 1 of the following year. \u00a0So, if a horse is born early in the year, it will have more time to mature. \u00a0The Kentucky Derby is made up of three-year-olds. \u00a0On paper, they are all the same age, but one might actually be six to eight months older than the others. \u00a0That horse should have the advantage. \u00a0That&#8217;s why every breeder&#8217;s goal is to have his foals born early each year. \u00a0They actually call it foaling season.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2100\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9678\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2100-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">There&#8217;s a reason why Lexington is the Thoroughbred Capital of the World. \u00a0It&#8217;s also the reason why 90 per cent of the world&#8217;s bourbon is made within a 50 mile radius of here. \u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0<em>limestone<\/em>. \u00a0Under our beautiful blue grass, there is a layer of limestone that leaches calcium into the water. \u00a0That calcium makes the horses&#8217; bones stronger, and it makes the bourbon taste the way it does.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2230\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9683\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2230-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Horses are walked in a paddock before each race. \u00a0This gives the owners, trainers, jockeys, and bettors one last look before the horses are saddled up. \u00a0This year will be the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. \u00a0The race is one and a quarter miles long, and it has only been won by three females (fillies). \u00a0However, it is the only event where\u00a0<em>female<\/em>\u00a0viewers outrank male viewers. \u00a0This year a top contender is Rosie Nepravnik. \u00a0Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if Rosie could win the Run for the Roses? \u00a0She finished ninth in 2011.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2212\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9684\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2212-1024x806.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">In the past 25 years, the predicted favorite has only won three times. \u00a0The Derby is the first of three races, known as The Triple Crown. \u00a0(The other two are the Preakness and the Belmont). \u00a0And to show how difficult the winning the Triple Crown is, only 11 horses have ever won it. \u00a0The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978. \u00a0Even though it is the second oldest continually held sporting even in the country (the Westminster dog show is first), there have only been five female jockeys to ride in the Derby.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kentuckyderby.com\/sites\/kentuckyderby.com\/files\/u605\/RS28858__STS8877.JPG\" width=\"455\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(<a official flower. \u00a0It was dubbed the &#8220;Run for the Roses&#8221; by a sportscaster in 1925. \u00a0Kroger makes the rose garland at one of its Louisville stores every year so that the public can watch. \u00a0The garland is made of of 400 red roses sewn in a green satin backing. \u00a0It is adorned with a &#8220;crown&#8221; which symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the winners&#8217; circle.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2181\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9685\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2181-1024x716.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Every farm involved in the racing industry has its own silks. \u00a0The jockeys wear white pants and turtlenecks but change their silks for each race, depending on the farm they are riding for. \u00a0It&#8217;s just the same as a sports team having its own colors and uniforms. \u00a0The farms are often known by their silks. \u00a0My favorite silks are always the ones with polka dots, and it doesn&#8217;t matter which color they are.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2187\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9690\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2187-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The money that is awarded to the race winners is known as the\u00a0<em>purse<\/em>.\u00a0 In the early days of horse racing, someone literally put the winnings in a purse and hung it on a post at the finish line. \u00a0The first jockey to grab the purse was on the winning horse. \u00a0Jockeys work pretty much on a free-lance basis. \u00a0Their earnings are a percentage of the purse that their mounts win. \u00a0In other words, a jockey&#8217;s wages are based on his wins. \u00a0The more wins a jockey has help him to get more and better races.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2178\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9691\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2178-1024x876.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"526\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0The best horses run in the races with the largest purses. \u00a0For instance, the owner of the 2010 Kentucky Derby winner won $1,425,000. \u00a0That&#8217;s a lot of money. \u00a0However, the owner of the winner of a claims race might only make $15,000. \u00a0It&#8217;s all about the quality of the horse.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/2012\/04\/29\/a-day-at-the-races-2\/img_2202\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9694\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the2seasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_2202-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Only 20 or so horses will make it to the Kentucky Derby, and only one of them will make it to the winners&#8217; circle.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" style=\"text-align: center;\">One more interesting fact is that when most great horses die, the hooves, heart, and head are the only things buried in their graves. \u00a0Those parts are considered the real soul of the horse. \u00a0Last week legendary Storm Cat died at age 30. \u00a0He earned $500,000 each time he successfully bred a mare. \u00a0A breeding is considered successful when a live\/healthy foal is born. \u00a0 He was a great Thoroughbred both because of his race record and because he sired so many winners. \u00a0 He was buried whole, an honor reserved for the horse
