I try to change my window boxes with the season. \u00a0I enjoy doing it, and it helps give our house a seasonal look. \u00a0Our summer boxes were looking great in their prime, but we all know prime time is over. \u00a0Unlike this late-fall flowery box above that sits in a French window, our season ends in early October.<\/h3>\n

The geraniums I bought for my boxes this year came from our local farmers’ market. \u00a0They were wonderful all season long I think because I kept up with the dead-heading. Since they looked so great, I did a little research to see if I could keep a good thing going. \u00a0And it turns out that I can. \u00a0A high-five to that!!! \u00a0And with a few simple steps, you can save your geraniums till next year, too.<\/h3>\n

And here’s all you do to prolong the life of your geraniums so you can reuse them next summer:<\/h3>\n

1. \u00a0The first thing you do is dig up the geraniums, and get rid of as much of the dirt around the roots as possible. \u00a0I also cut off any remaining blooms and trimmed them down some.<\/h3>\n

2. \u00a0The next step is to hang them upside down in a basement or garage. \u00a0They need to stay cool, and our unfinished basement is the perfect spot to be their home away from home.<\/h3>\n

3. \u00a0Once a month you will take them down and soak the roots in a water for 1-2 hours. \u00a0You don’t need a waterfall – a bowl or bucket of water will do. \u00a0When they are finished soaking, hang them upside down again. \u00a0Eventually, they will lose all of their leaves, but the stems will stay alive. \u00a0 \u00a0I set a monthly alarm on my phone as a reminder.<\/h3>\n

4. \u00a0Next spring you can take them outside and replant them as if they were newly purchased plants. \u00a0They should “spring” back to life in no time. \u00a0With any luck, maybe your window boxes will look as lovely and fresh as this Park Avenue window box does.<\/h3>\n
