Books We’ve Read Recently

Books we’ve read recently that we highly recommend is the topic of today’s blog post.

I love getting book suggestions from friends, so we thought we each would share some books we have read recently.  As always  we would love for you to share anything you have read that you enjoyed.  I haven’t been able to read a ton since Google came home, but I thought I would share what I have read, and Mom will share hers.  You can click any link to buy the books.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steair?t=the2sea 20&language=en US&l=li2&o=1&a=1524797189 - Books We've Read Recentlydman.

This was a fun suspense book and once I got started, I didn’t want to put it down.  Twists and turns kept me turning the page, but I will say I didn’t love the ending.  I wanted there to be more, but I guess it that is the beauty of a book.

The Man in the Rockefeller Suit by Mark Seal.

Wow, I wasn’t familiar with the story of this con man.  The whole time I was reading this, I couldn’t believe it was a true story.  This book is an older one, but I highly recommend it as a great read.  This one makes one realize how gullible and trusting we are as individuals. ir?t=the2sea 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=0452298032 - Books We've Read Recently

When I am doing laundry or cleaning during naptime ,I like to listen to podcast.  I have listened to the parenting podcast for Denaye Barahona for a couple of years.  She has a variety of guests, and I like her style.  She is very big into bringing the simple back into childhood.  She encourages getting the children outside, free play etc. She recently came out with a book, and if you do not have time for podcast, the book is a good quick read and has ways for your family to simplify.

Janette here.  I have read some really god books lately and highly, highly recommend most of them.  Here we go…..

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor JenkinsReid

I absolutely loved this book because it is written in a very unique way.  Daisy Jones and the Six is a book about a rock band back in the 1970’s so they are my generation.  The novel is like one big interview and gives different band members’ versions of the same event.  There’s an interesting twist at the end, and if you enjoy music, then you will like this book.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Read

I selected this novel because it is by the same author who wrote Daisy Jones and the Six.  It, too, is written in a different way from most novels.  It is the story of a gorgeous, world-famous actress and her life as a movie star.  When reading it, I thought about Elizabeth Taylor.  I am not finished yet, but every time I sit down, I grab my Kindle and read a few pages.  I love this book.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Jordan read Where the Crawdads Sing first and raved about it.  So, I decided to read it to find out what all the hype is about.  Friends, there’s a reason this book has been on the New York Times number one book for so long.  It is a wonderful story and very well written.  I read it about a month ago and am still thinking about it.  If you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favor and buy it now.

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult has written a ton of books, but this is the first one by her that I have read.  It was a wonderful book about a black nurse who encounters racism in the work place.  Her whole world is rocked by a decision that she had to make in a split second.  The book made me aware of the subtle ways prejudice is all around, but many of us don’t notice it.  Based on this book, I plan to read some more novels by Jodi Picoult.

The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell

This nonfiction book is written by a woman from Britain who moved to Denmark with her husband for his job.  They moved to the town where Legos are manufactured.  Since Denmark is known as the happiest country, I was excited to read about life there and to learn why they are so happy.  However, I didn’t like the way Ms. Russell wrote. I felt the book had a snarky tone to it and that she was looking for negatives.  The book is divided into the 12 months, and she writes about a different topic each month.  I didn’t really enjoy the book and don’t recommend it.

So, there you go.  That’s what we have been reading lately.  Please let us know books that you have read and enjoyed.  As Jordan said, we love recommendations.

Take care and Cheers!

I’ve read many of those too! Recent reads that I’ve enjoyed: Nine Perfect Strangers, Mrs. Everything, One Day in December, The Last Mrs. Parrish, Waiting for Tom Hanks.

I also meant to mention that I too didn’t care for the Year of Living Danishly. I’ve read several books on Danish/Scandinavian culture (another one that I wouldn’t recommend is There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather) and the best one I’ve found is The Little Book of Hygge.

We both loved it, too. We forgot to add it our list. We like her even more now that we have read Becoming than we did before, and that’s saying a lot because we loved her before, too.

Of your lists, I have only read Where the Crawdads Sing. One of my friends loved it so much, she gifted it to several friends for Valentines Day. I was one of the lucky ones. I love anything Mary Kay Andrews writes and just finished Sunset Beach. I do love hearing what everyone is reading. Thanks!
