Old Mirror Adds Style to a New Bathroom

A few months ago I wrote about the afternoon that my daughter-in-law Josie and I spent at the Big Flea in January.  When we were there, Josie spotted an antique mirror that had once hung in a dress shop for ladies.  We both felt the mirror was way too expensive.  We had a nice chat with the vendors, but they weren’t willing to negotiate on the price.

Then in March I attended the annual Bluegrass Trust Antique show here in Lexington and saw a mirror that looked just like the one we saw at the Big Flea near DC.  I mentioned to the vendor that my daughter-in-law had fallen for a mirror just like that.  He asked me where we had seen the mirror, and I told him at the Big Flea.

He laughed and said it was the same mirror and was reduced by a few hundred dollars.  After hyperventilating, I phoned Josie and told her about the mirror and that it was reduced by a few hundred dollars.  We talked about it a little bit, and she talked to the vendor, and then she bought it.  I was so excited for her.

Josie’s plan all along was to replace a small, plain mirror in the powder room with an old mirror.  I visited Josie and Cory a few weeks ago, and the mirror was hung and looking right at home.

It looks so great with the new construction.  Now let’s look at the rest of the tiny powder room.

The towel is a linen napkin that is part of a set she bought in NYC.

I love these silhouettes.

They would be easy to make using this method.

If you look closely, you can see my reflection while taking the photo.

I love that she gathered some old bottles in a special way.

She has a thing for old handkerchiefs.  These belonged to her grandmother.

This powder room is proof that adding vintage touches to new construction can really add character and personality to a room.

Take care.
