A Keyless Lock

Keys 1

This isn’t a very sexy blog entry.  Actually, none of our entries are sexy, but this is more utilitarian than most.  It’s about something both our home and Jordan’s home has, and we and our misters all love it.

Trilogy Alarm Lock

We have keyless entries for our back doors, and we love them.  For our front entries, we have the doors and keys, but for the doors we use the most, we prefer the keyless method.

Securitron Digital Keypad

They come in different styles and with different options which means that everyone who buys one can select a design that will fit their needs.

Jordan and I like them because we do lots of outdoor activities.  It’s one less thing we have to deal with if we are hiking in the woods, kayaking on a lake, or taking a long bicycle ride.  We know that there won’t be any worrying about losing a key.  When we get home, all we need to do is punch in our pass code.  It also eliminates fumbling for the keys when our arms are full of other things like groceries.

They are easy enough to install that you or your housemate can do it in a few hours.  There is no need to pay a handyman.

So, there you have it.  A big thumbs up from The 2 Seasons for keyless lock systems.

Take care.

Now I Can Do Anything

I received a fun book for Christmas this year, and I thought I would share.

It gives directions on how to do lots of things – things you wanted to know and maybe some things your didn’t.

For instance, you can learn how to make many kinds of martinis…….

or dive like an Olympian…

mount an elephant, camel, or horse……(Like I said, some things you might not need to know)

remove stains naturally….

or twist ballons.  It has over directions for how to do over 500 things and can be purchased here.

Wooden Chalkboard

Thanks to chalk paint, which has now been around for a while, I have been able to take some little wooden plaques and put them to good use.

I really like using chalk board spray paint.

Ever heard of a blank slate?????  These little wooden plaques are available in different sizes at most craft stores, and when sprayed, turn into mini chalk boards.

They work great for labeling different food on a buffet table when we are entertaining.

And they come in handy when we need place cards.

They really come in handy when we want our guests to feel comfortable in the kitchen.

Gracie has nothing to do with this blog, but she is just so cute that I had to share this photo.  She is in her “I’m the perfect pet” pose.

So, how do you use a blank slate?  Share your ideas with us.

Cheers!

Kids In A Candy Store

Well,  we aren’t actually kids, but Mr. Autumn and I had a chance to go to an adorable candy store on our last trip to France.

We were high in the mountains in the village of Besse.

It’s located eight miles from a ski resort and is loaded with charm.

We took an afternoon stroll to check out the shops.  I had been bitten by a dog on my leg the day before, and I needed to work out the soreness.

This little candy store looked charming, and so, we went in.

It was filled with all kinds of sweets.

I was surprised that everything was within touching distance to its customers.  I guess their health department packaging/display requirements aren’t as strict as they are in the USA.

They had all kinds of chocolates – milk, dark, and white.  We bought some of each.  We needed the energy since we were on a three-week bicycling trip through France.

This bowl of cherries is made of marzipan.  I know.  They do look real.

These candies are in different flavors.

This bowl of miniature potatoes is chocolate – kind of like malt balls.

The label let us know the “potatoes were grown made in the region.

These candies were tempting.

This packaging reminded me of tin lunch boxes.

These “fruits” tasted like Peeps.  Yummy!!!

Even the little chalk board signs were cute.

After we made our purchases, we continued our walk.  We had some calories to work off.

Take care.

Argentinian Empanadas

We hope you enjoy this great recipe that can be either an appetizer or a main course. We have eaten a few of them recently.

ARGENTINIAN EMPANADAS

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening

  • 2 onions, chopped

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

  • 2 teaspoons Hungarian sweet paprika

  • 3/4 teaspoon hot paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar

  • 1/4 cup raisins

  • 1/2 cup pitted green olives, chopped

  • 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped

  • salt to taste

  • 1 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed

Directions

  1. In a saute; pan melt the shortening and add the chopped onions. Cook the onions until just before they begin to turn golden. Remove from the heat and stir in the sweet paprika, hot paprika, crushed red pepper flakes and salt to taste.

  2. Spread the meat on a sieve and pour boiling water on it for partial cooking. Allow meat to cool. Place meat in a dish add salt to taste, cumin and vinegar. Mix and add the meat to the onion mixture. Mix well and place on a flat to dish to cool and harden.

  3. Cut puff pastry dough into 10 round shells. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture on each round; add some of the raisins, olives and hard boiled egg. Avoid reaching the edges of the pastry with the filling because its oiliness will prevent good sealing. Slightly wet the edge of the pastry, fold in two and stick edges together. The shape should resemble that of a half-moon. You should have a 2/3 to 1/2 inch flat edge of pastry to work with. Seal by twisting edge, step by step, between thumb and index finger, making sure to add pressure before releasing the pinch and moving on to the next curl. Other sealing procedures like pinching without curling or using a fork to seal will not prevent juice leaks during baking, and empanadas must be juicy.

  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Place empanadas on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Be sure to prick each empanada with a fork near the curl to allow steam to escape during baking. Glaze with egg for shine and bake until golden, about 20 to 30 minutes.

Just Maybe

Sorry we haven’t been posting much lately, but we have been working on a big project.

- Maybe we are in a different time zone.

- Maybe we are on a different continent.

- Maybe we are in a different climate and season.

- And for sure we do not have a good internet connection.

Here is a hint about what we are up to.

Another Faux Zinc Letter

Last week we showed the great success we had using cardboard letters to make a sign for Jordan’s dining room.  You can read about it here.  But before we tackled that project, we practiced with a little letter.  We bought a cardboard “H”, which is Jordan and Mr. Spring’s last name initial and tried our technique on it first.

Being supervised by Gracie, I am applying the first coat, which is a black acrylic craft paint.

The second coat adds the WOW!!! factor.  I applied pearl paint, which is also an acrylic craft paint.

Then to make it look really industrial, I added upholstery tacks that are in a zinc finish.

This letter has a completely different vibe from the dining room wall letters.  I think Jordan is going to add it to the photo gallery that she is putting together for her stairway.  We’ll keep you posted when it goes up.

Vegetable Frittata

Today we have a great recipe that can be a hearty brunch or your evening meal.  It contains bacon, but you can omit it and have a great vegetarian meal.  I tried it, and both Mr. Autumn and I loved it.

VEGETABLE FRITTATA

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces

  • 2 cups frozen shredded hash browns, thawed

  • 1 cup chopped broccoli

  • 1/2 cup chopped green pepper

  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed

  • 6 eggs

  • 3 tablespoons water

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Directions

  1. In a 8-in. ovenproof skillet, cook the bacon until crisp. Drain, reserving 2 tablespoons drippings in the skillet. Remove bacon to paper towel. To the skillet, add hash browns, broccoli, green pepper, onion and rosemary; cover and cook over low heat until has browns are golden brown vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. Beat eggs, water, salt and pepper; pour over hash browns. Top with bacon and paprika. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes or until eggs are completely set.

Note:  I added crumbled feta cheese to the top during the last five minutes of baking.

The Hole in the Wall Gang

The Hole in the Wall Gang, no disrespect to Paul Newman, consists of two people – Jordan and I.  When I was there, another one of our many projects was repairing some holes in the wall of the Florida room.  They had a few leaks last year caused by damage from all of the snow they had in Syracuse.  It broke records for the amount of snow received.

It was not a hard fix, just time consuming. It took several steps.

We simply followed the directions on the patch repair box.  First we covered the damage with a plastic mesh.

Then we applied four thin coats of spackle.

We had to let it dry between each coat.  Some of the spackles are quick drying, but unfortunately, we had the slow-drying kind, so we waited eight hours between.

Once it was dry, I sanded while holding the sweeper to catch the fly-away dust.

Then we applied two coats of paint.  The repair hardly shows up.  This was so easy, and I think we might go pro.
